2020 Season Recaps - 4th Place
4th Place: Rugg and Tugg (9-4) – Jon Keetz
Coming in 4th place with 1,725 points for (2nd best) is Rugg and Tugg, owned by Jon Keetz.
What Went Right:
Starting with some low hanging fruit, Keetz had the fewest points against. It didn’t matter too much because of how many points his own team scored, but I talk about points scored/against in every recap so here we are.
Keetz was able to hit big on his early round WR investments and they led the way for his team. After drawing the last pick in the draft, he went with Tyreek Hill and Davante Adams at the 1-2 turn. Guess where those two players rank in WR scoring? If you guessed 1 and 2, you’d be right. Tyreek Hill has put together a line of 87-1,276 and 15 TDS receiving while chipping in another 123 yards and 2 TDs as a runner. His 297 fantasy points slot him as the 5th highest FLEX-eligible player and the 2nd highest scoring WR. The #1 WR of course, is Davante Adams and the 301 points he’s scored. Adams has totaled 109 catches for 1,328 yards and 17 TDs this year. 34 TDs combined for those two. Nice.
Keetz let the draft come to him when it came to QB, taking Aaron Rodgers in the 9th round. Rodgers was the 7th QB drafted and comes into Week 17 as the #5 QB in our scoring. He’s averaged 28 points a game and has put up 20 or more in all but 1 start.
Other late round picks that worked out for Keetz included Antonio Gibson (8th round) and TJ Hockenson (11th round). Gibson took a while to get going, but by Week 4 he was a must-start RB. He ranks as RB13 in our scoring even after missing 3 games with injury. Hockenson is TE4 on the year and really improved during his second year. He’s got 64-700 and 6 TDs to his name.
Wayne Gallman and Mike Davis were key free agent pick ups by the former champ. Davis took over for Mccaffrey and is RB14 this year. Gallman took over for Saquon/Devonta Freeman and has registered 7 games with 10 or more points this year.
What Went Wrong:
The loss of Courtland Sutton was a tough blow for Keetz’ team. His 3rd round pick missed Week 1 and then tore his ACL in Week 2.
Zach Ertz was a bust – TE33 after getting off to a horrible start and missing 5 games with injury. (4th round)
Aside from some injury/underperformance, the worst thing that happened to Keetz was his loss in Round 2 of the playoffs. Keetz dominated for most of the year and went on a 5 game win streak to end the regular season. His team was on fire and it looked like he could make another title run…. Until he didn’t. His team totally crapped out in Week 15, putting up just 83 points in primetime. It was his second lowest point total of the year and the lowest since Week 6 when he scored 63. Oddly enough that matchup was also against my team……really weird. (Keetz didn’t tank against me on purpose did he?)
At the end of the day, Keetz made some uncharacteristic mistakes with his lineup that ended his season. Going into Week 15, he had to fill both of his RB spots and his FLEX spot with 3 of the following 5 players: Melvin Gordon, JD McKissick, Wayne Gallman, Mike Davis and TY Hilton.
Keetz went with Mike Davis since Mccaffrey was out, which made sense. But the other decisions were toss-ups. He started Wayne Gallman in his RB2 and TY Hilton in the FLEX over both Gordon and McKissick. He actually had Gordon in his lineup at one point leading up to Sunday, but must have made a late change? Anyways you can see the box score – Gallman and Hilton combined for 15 fantasy points, while Gordon and McKissick combined for 48 points. That’s a 33 point swing there that helped ended his season.
He also had the misfortune of playing against Kamara in the 3rd place game, so that sucks.
Preseason Prediction:
“I say Keetz goes 7-6, gets the bye and loses in the 2nd round of the playoffs. His team is great on paper, but no way he wins this league twice in a row.”
Dead ass here, 3 right and 4 wrong.
Final Thoughts:
Another successful season for Keetz and even though he didn’t win the title, he’s still the team to beat in this league. Over the past 4 seasons he’s compiled a record of 38-14 and won 2 league titles. That’s a 73% winning percentage not including playoffs. #1 in the league in all of those categories.
