GWBL - 2022 Season Recaps - 6th Place
Team:
Hill Bill - DMO (8-6) - 1,880 points (8th of 10)
What Went Right:
I mentioned something similar in Keetz recap and it sounds salty (it is), but DMO was fortunate to have the record he had. When you finish 8th in points scored it’s not common to finish two games over .500. Both Frader and Lamone outscored DMO and they went 5-9 and 6-8 respectively. Alas, fantasy is a week to week game and an unfair game at that.
Looking at it now, DMO had the weirdest season of probably any team in the league. He had some huge draft busts in the top half of his draft - Najee Harris (moderate bust), DJ Moore (huge bust), Brandin Cooks (huge bust). He also had some big misses in the mid range with guys like Hunter Henry, Kadarius Toney, James Robinson and Elijah Moore. He wasn’t extremely active on waivers either - he had the fewest add/drops in the league with only 6. Dyl led the league with 47 for comparison and noone else had fewer than 11. Despite these factors he still finished 8-6 and made the playoffs. I guess that’s good fortune? (#salty)
Anyways lets look at the players here - Dalvin Cook provided a stable presence as his RB1 all year and is currently RB9 on the season. He didn’t blow up like he has in past years, but he scored 19 points a game and had 14 or more in 11 of 14 games. Consistency is key and Cook provided that.
Tyreek Hill was the star of DMO’s team, currently ranking as WR2 and averaging 23.3 points per game. Despite downgrading from Patrick Mahomes to Tua, he’s on pace for the best season of his career in terms of yards (+1500) and catches (+109). He still has 3 games to play so he’s likely to blow by those figures. He was DMO’s 3rd round pick and easily the best player taken in that round.
Miles Sanders was another player who outperformed his draft slot by a mile. He had a career year and firmly established himself as a top tier RB this season (Currently RB11). The 8th round pick has picked up 1200 all purpose yards and 12 TDs while playing for one of the best offenses in football.
What Went Wrong:
I already mentioned the busts above - Najee and DJ Moore were fairly unexpected and held DMO’s team back a bit. DJ Moore was especially frustrating as he’d score 30 points one week and follow it up with 4 the next. That’s not hyperbole, that actually happened in Weeks 8 and 9. He played the same trick in Weeks 12 and 14 with 22 and 1 points respectively. He was so inconsistent that DMO didn’t even start him in the playoffs.
That leads me to the other thing - his playoff loss to Dylan. What a bad beat. He scored 157 and STILL lost by 11 points. I think 157 is a lot and deserving of a win, but our scoring is so ridiculous I don’t know what a good score is anymore. Not that my team put up any good scores. Anyways there were two brutal things that stuck out from this loss:
Miles Sanders averages 18 points per game and scored 4 this past week. If he scored his average DMO wins.
Dylan got 29 points from Latavius Murray. Latavius 32 year old Murray. Latavius - on his 3rd team in less than 3 years - Murray. Latavius Fucking Murray. He averages 14.7 points per game and he conveniently decided to double his season average in Round 1 of the playoffs….. and somehow Dylan actually started him. This is the second year in a row Dyls pulled some honky dicksuck magic out of his ass in the playoffs and won a matchup because of it (Justin Jackson last year, people dont forget). What a lucky fuck. Can’t wait to see Dyl tonight and tell him what a lucky fuck he is. Holy shit, where’s the tylenol.
Best Owner Move:
Garrett Wilson in the 13th round, no question about it. Wilson has had some uneven performances due to bad QB play (understatement), but he’s had a great season and is WR18 heading into Week 16. He’s totaled 66 catches for 966 yards and 4 TDs and will certainly top the 1000 yard mark in his rookie season. I believe he’s the frontrunner for AFC rookie of the year and I don’t see that changing.
For comparison, here are some other 13th round picks: Davante Parker, Jameson Williams, Treylon Burks, George Pickens, Tyler Allgeier. Thankfully for the rest of us this isn’t a keeper league….. yet at least.
Worst Owner Move:
Despite the aforementioned salt I have to say that DMO had a great season. He drafted really well and it propelled him to the playoffs. I have to come up with something so I guess I’ll say his worst move was only making 6 moves all year. There were probably some guys he could have dropped and he may have wasted some bench spots - Eli Moore, Toney and James Robinson mainly. Waivers are usually solid in our 10 man league so those may have been missed opportunities. He coulda added Latavius Murray!! Unbelievable.
Preseason Prediction:
I said he’d finish 6th place and I nailed it. 4 of 6 here.
ESPN said 5th of 10 - ESPN is 5 for 6 now.
Final Thoughts:
Congrats to DMO on a nice season and his first GWBL playoff appearance. This league has some funny dynamics where the same teams seem to always make playoffs (Keetz, Tieg, Dyl, Rob D, etc). It’s hard to shake the balance of power and DMO was able to do that in his 3rd year. Onward and upward, let’s see if he can get his first title next year.
