2018 DRAFT RECAPS - 9TH OVERALL

2018 DRAFT RECAPS - 9TH OVERALL

Number 9: Bud Light & the Dilly Dilly’s owned by Dylan Whiting

First Five:

Dyl drew the 9th pick this year, which was fair considering he finished 3rd last year. I’ll say it again, but it actually wasn’t a bad thing to have a low pick in this draft. Certainly better than picks 5, 6, or 7 in my opinion. Anyways Dyl also went RB/RB to start he draft – Alvin Kamara and Leonard Fournette. While both may be susceptible to the sophomore slump, both are expected to have monster years. Alvin Kamara will basically have the backfield to himself for the first 4 weeks while Mark Ingram serves his suspension. Leonard Fournette on the other hand – he’s the clear cut lead back as long as he’s healthy. With our points per carry scoring, Fournette’s high volume games can be huge.

Dylan went  TY Hilton, Zach Ertz and Deshaun Watson with his 3rd, 4th and 5th round picks. If Andrew Luck is healthy, Hilton could actually be a steal at the end of the third round. From 2013-2016, Hilton caught 324 passes (81 per) for 5,000 yards (1,250 per) and 23 touchdowns (almost 6 per). He had 130+ targets in each of those years. I think people are sleeping on him a bit just in case Luck isn’t back to 100%. Zach Ertz was one of the top 3 TEs and getting him in the 4th round is fair. I took Travis Kelce 7 picks earlier, so I’d say Dylan got better value. Last but not least – Deshaun Watson. Too early to take a QB in my opinion, but let’s not forget what he did last season. In 6 starts he scored 20, 27, 38, 36, 26 and 40 points.

Next Five:

Things got interesting in the middle rounds so we’ll look at them individually. Dion Lewis & Clark was Dylan’s 6th round pick, which is a little rich for my blood. Lewis is injury prone and coming off a career year, which is a bad combo. I did like his 7th round pick however – Marquise It's Not Worth Goodwinning if you Can't Goodwin Big!! And no, not just because it was the 69th overall but…. giggity. Anyways Goodwin and Jimmy G showed some real chemistry last year – Goodwin averaged aver 13 points per game the last 7 weeks of the season.

Dylan musta smoked after that pick because he then took Sammy Twatskins and Randall Corn on the Cob with his 8th and 9th round picks. I think Watkins is worthless and Randall Cobb is so injury prone. The two of them finished as WR42 and WR43 last year, so don’t hold your breath here. Dylan redeemed himself in the 10th round though – Hanging With Mr. Cooper Kupp was the 92nd pick. Kupp was a top 30 WR last year and is one of Goff’s favorite targets.

Last Five:

Dylan filled out the rest of his roster in the final rounds, while also adding some backfield depth. Patrick Mahomes is a really exciting player and is an awesome complement to Deshaun Watson. Dylan will definitely lead the league in QB rushing. The Broncos D was another solid pick, they should regain some of the form from 2 years ago – last year was more of an offensive problem than defense. Dylan’s last pick was wasted as his kicker got cut yesterday, but I’m not gonna knock him too much for that on (was a surprise cut).

Dilly Dilly took two interesting RBs in the late rounds (12/13) who could make an impact. Peyton Barber is the Bucs starter right now and a starting RB in the 12th round is a steal by any standards. Latavius Murray also has the potential to be a starting RB is Dalvin Cook underperforms or has any set backs with his knee. At the very least he’ll be a goal line vulture and will be used extensively in positive game scripts – the Vikings figure to be leading a lot this year and that’s when Murray makes his money.

Grade:

I give Dyl a B/B+ for this draft. I’ll take his combination of Kamara/Fournette over Tieg’s combo of Gordon/Hunt, which is the main reason he gets a slight nod over Tieg. I don’t love that he took both a QB and a TE high, but if it works out it’s gonna be huge. His WRs are somewhat weak though and I think that’ll hold him back a bit.

Prediction:

I say Dylan goes 7-6, makes the playoffs but loses in the second round. His RB duo of Fournette/Kamara is just absurd and the Ertz/Watson duo will give him an edge at TE/QB every week. I think he’s one breakout WR away from a deep playoff run.
