GWBL - 2022 Season Recaps - 7th Place
Team:
Tuna Tungyamotha - Lamone (6-8), 1901 points (7th of 10)
What Went Right:
I’m going to take a weird angle here - I think the #1 thing that went right for Lamone was that he almost made the playoffs in spite of his disastrous draft. Here’s his first seven picks, in order:
Jamar Chase: WR13 but missed 5 of 14 games including a bye and has 4 games with 13 or fewer points.
Alvin Kamara: 2nd round pick is RB19 and has 6 games with 11 or fewer points. In our fake life scoring you need more than that from your 2nd pick.
George Kittle: TE10 and just hasn’t produced much this year. He’ll probably go off tonight after I write this.
Zeke Elliott: RB22, not even the best RB on his team.
Jerry Jeudy: WR35, hurt most of the year and suffered from Broncos Country Syndrome
Kyler Murrary: QB14, out for year
Adam Thielen: WR28
So despite all the misfortune, Lamone was only 81-82 points away from a playoff spot.
Okay what ACTUALLY went right? Rhamondre Stevenson’s breakout. Rhamondre flashed in his rookie year, but he really took the Year 2 leap and became a premier RB in the NFL. He’s RB11 in fantasy and had 7 games of 20 or more points. His usage as a receiver was especially productive in this league now that we’re PPR. (For now)
Antonio Gibson was another late round RB (9th) who worked out. It took his teammate getting shot for it to happen, but Gibson is RB17 and averages 15 points per week.
Timing was another thing that worked out - when his team had a good week, EVERYONE had a good week. Of his 6 wins, 5 of them came when he scored 160+.
What Went Wrong:
It was feast or famine and Lamone had some down weeks throughout the season. He had 4 games with 115 or fewer and scored 130 or fewer in 7 of his losses. 130 sounds like a lot, but 140 was the mark to hit in this inflationary setting. (We’re changing the rules back next year this year got out of hand.)
All of the draft busts I mentioned above fit here as well. Jamar Chase got hurt and Alvin Kamara had the worst season of his career. Kittle and Jeudy missed some time and suffered from inconsistent QB play.
The Week 13 loss to Keetz was the game that sunk his season. All he needed was 117 to win and his team completely fell flat. 99 points and a cloud of dust. Noone scored more than 15 or so on his team that week. Just an all around dud. That game ultimately cost him his season.
Best Owner Move:
Chris Olave in the 10th round was a nice pick. The rookie from Ohio State is WR21 and has established himself as the WR1 in New Orleans. His route running and deep ball abilities really stuck out this year.
Worst Owner Move:
Lamone still has 59 of his FAAB which isn’t the best use of resources. Then again I still have 40 so I can’t throw stones. It’s always nice to have FAAB at the end of the year in case of injury.
Aside from that I’d say Zeke in the 4th? He picked him over Josh Allen, AJ Brown Jaylen Waddle, Mahomes and many other players who made more of an impact. That’s hindsight though, Lamone was shoring up his RB2 spot and I can’t knock that too much.
Preseason Prediction:
BOOYA - I said he’d finish 7th and he finished 7th. 2 for 4 now, let’s get it going. I said he was really close to a playoff team, but would come up just short. Nailed it.
ESPN said 6th of 10 - ESPN is 3 for 4 now.
Final Thoughts:
A really interesting season from Lamone and he ends up missing the playoffs on a tie breaker. He tied Keetz at 6-8 but had 81 fewer points. That’s 5.78 points per week which stings. Oh well, Lamone will be back in the playoff conversation next year I’m sure.
