2020 DRAFT RECAPS - PART 2
Pick 7: THE TC WILLIAMS TITANS, JOHN CANNELLOS
What I Like:
Russel Wilson in the 8th round is a good pick at QB. He’s pretty comparable to the other top tier QBs but was the least expensive (Jackson, Mahomes, Murray, Dak and Watson).
Stefon Diggs and his Round 6 price tag. He’s had an uneven career, but there’s no denying he’s one of the most talented WRs in the NFL. The 1,100 yards and 6 TDs from last year should be the baseline.
Marlon Mack in the 9th round could be a steal if he truly is the Colts #1 RB. He’ll probably lose his job to Jonathan Taylor by Week 3 though.
What I Don’t Like:
Picking Miles Sanders in the 2nd round - I still can’t remember why I made that pick when Mixon and Aaron Jones were sitting there. He’s supposed to be the Eagles starting RB, but he’s hurt right now and was only good for half the season last year.
My WRs are really uncertain. Golladay gets the Mike Tolbert treatment from Marvin Jones and AJ Brown was pretty flukey last year with all the big plays. Diggs could be great, but he’s also playing with a new QB. Jerry Jeudy could be a breakout, but the Broncos passing game is crowded.
Grade & Prediction:
I give myself a C+ and a 78/100. My team looks decent on paper, but I don’t have anyone who actually scares you. The Miles Sanders pick was bad and the Josh Jacobs pick was really bad considering I passed up Michael Thomas, Chubb, Tyreek, Davante Adams and Edwards-Helaire.
I predict this team goes 5-8 and misses the playoffs. Just a really mediocre team
Pick 6: FULL BLACK BENCH, TIEG BEAN
What I Like:
Drew Brees in the 10th round is a great pick. He only played in 10 games last year and he still threw for 3,000 yards and 27 TDs (only 4 picks). If you’re going to wait on QB, this is how you do it.
Chris Godwin in the 3rd round is another steal and I would have taken him if he was there one pick later. He’s got a chance to be TB12’s #1 WR and put up Julian Edelman numbers.
What I Don’t Like:
Tieg’s WRs kinda stink aside from Chris Godwin. Terry McLaurin could be good, but he’ll face double teams all year long. As much as it saddens me to say… AJ Green is donezo. DeVante Parker is coming off a career year, but he’s already hurt. Sterling Shepard is someone you start in a 12 man full-PPR league, not someone you start in a 10 man half-PPR league.
Putting so many eggs into one basket – the Saints offense. While the Saints will put up points, starting Brees, Kamara and Jared Cook on the same roster is risky to say the least.
Grade & Prediction:
I give Tieg a B- for this draft, an 80/100. Kenyan Drake and David Johnson are both question marks and his WRs don’t scare anyone outside of Godwin. He’s also really weak at TE.
I predict Tieg goes 6-7 and misses the playoffs. It’s not a bad team, but not a great one either.
Pick 5: WATSON THOSE GURLEY FRIES, KEVIN O’CONNELL
What I Like:
Deshaun Watson in the 7th round is a slam dunk. He put up 3,800 passing yards, 400 rushing yards and 33 total TDs last year – finishing as QB4.
Cam Newton in the 13th round could be this year’s Lamar Jackson. The impact is lessened by the fact that Kev is already set at QB, but a good pick is a good pick regardless of roster construction.
I also love the Taysom Hill pick – I had no idea he was eligible at TE this year. Tyler Higbee is Kev’s starting TE right now, but if Hill earns more of a role in the Saints offense this could be really interesting.
What I Don’t Like:
I don’t love taking Gurley in the 4th round. He’s been injured for what feels like 2 years now and his health is enough of a concern that the Rams were willing to part ways. They released him outright despite the fact he scored 12 TDs last year and despite the fact he’s only 26 years old. The Falcons have already noted that his knee will need to “be managed” which doesn’t sound great.
Kev’s gonna have a hell of a time figuring out who to start in his WR2 slot. DK Metcalf, DJ Chark and Marvin Jones are all good players, but good luck trying to figure out who to start each week.
Grade & Prediction:
I give Kev a B for this team, about an 84/100. He’s got a ton of upside at RB and one of the best QBs, but his WRs and TEs are somewhat weak.
I say Kev goes 7-6 and loses in the first round. Kev is the most luck-starved owner in the league and a first round playoff exit is all the fantasy gods will give him.
Pick 4: FORESKIN FONDUE, MATT LAMONAKIS
What I Like:
Lamone with the most inappropriate team name in the league for the 5th year running. Love it.
I also like that Lamone had the conviction to take Derrick Henry over Dalvin Cook and Alvin Kamara. The rankings/ADP wouldn’t support it, but I do. Both of those guys are in the middle of contract disputes and both have dealt with injuries recently. (Kamara last year and Cook every year of his career.) Meanwhile Henry is an absolute monster and given our scoring, he could easily finish as RB1.
Mark Andrews in the 5th round was a steal in my opinion. Him and Ertz were the second tier of high profile TEs and Ertz went 13 picks before Andrews. Simple math makes that good value. Doesn’t hurt that Andrews plays with Lamar Jackson.
What I Don’t Like:
Lamone’s QBs are pretty brutal. Tannehill had unsustainable success last year and aside from some brief stretches with the Dolphins, he just hasn’t been a good QB in his career. Kirk Cousins is his backup and he plays on a run first offense that just lost Stefon Diggs.
Speaking of TannEhill – I’m not sure having a QB and the RB from the same team is a good idea. The Titans have a low-volume, conservative offense and there could be weeks where these two reduce each other’s upside.
Grade & Prediction:
I give Lamone a B, or an 86/100. His team has really good depth with start-worthy players like Kareem Hunt, James White, Julian Edelman and Hunter Henry on his bench. He’s all set in case of injury.
I say Lamone goes 7-6 and loses in the second round of the playoffs. He’s got a really good team, but he’ll need to do some work on the QB front.
