2017 George W. Bush League Draft Recaps - 3rd Pick

PICK:

3RD OVERALL

TEAM:

THE FOURNETTEUATE FEW owned and poorly named once again by Len Peabody. Seriously though, what does that team name mean? A quick google search shows that the Fortunate Few is a country cover band? I don’t know Ken, I just don’t know

TOP 5:

Picking out of the three hole was tough this year……that’s what she said.

Okay okay enough. Antonio Brown was a good pick at #3 and Ken should enjoy high productivity from him this year. Brown is getting up there in years (29) and could suffer if/when Big Ben goes down, but he’s a no doubt top 10 WR and a good pick at #3. Brown had three multi touch-down weeks last year which can easily win you your matchup. Note: If we had known more about Zeke Elliot’s suspension he might have been the pick here.

Ken took another high profile WR in the second round with Dez at #18. Dez is one of the most perplexing WR’s for me this year. Was last year a fluke? Is he just injury prone? Will him and Dak connect more this year? I don’t have the answers, but he looks really nice next to Antonio in Ken’s lineup.

Ken doubled down on RBs in the 3rd and 4th with Leonard Fournetteuate Few and Ty Montgomery Burns. Fournette is pretty straightforward – he’s an absolute specimen and should get a heavy workload. He was a man amongst boys in the SEC and the Jaguars used the 4th overall pick to draft him this past May. Sadly his line and QB are garbage and he’s already dealing with a foot injury. Ty Montgomery is another “yeah, but” type of player (as are all fantasy players, I try to see the good/bad in everyone). Yeah he looked pretty good and helped Lamone win the championship in the luckiest stream I’ve ever fucking seen in my life, BUT we’re not sure he can handle a full RB workload and the Packers are a pass-first team. If he does a lot of damage in the receiving game and stays healthy this could be a steal.

Last but not least, Matt Ryan in the 5th. Ryan was QB1 last year, but he lost his offensive coordinator and is coming off the biggest collapse in the history of sports. Do you really want to spend a 5th round draft pick on a guy who probably hasn’t slept well since Tom Brady ripped his heart out and pooped on it? I don’t think I would.

28-3....never forget

NEXT 5:

The middle rounds were pretty decent for Ken. I don’t have many complaints here. Mark Ingram in the 6th could be a steal, he produced pretty good numbers the last two years and I figure he’ll be a top 25 RB again. Over the last two seasons hes totaled 1,800 rushing yards, 700 receiving yards, 96 catches and 16 TDs. For some reason though, the Saints brought in Adrian Peterson and Alvin Kamara to mess up our fantasy analysis. Moving on……Darren McFadden in the 9th was a solid pick as well, because screw you Tieg.

Even though Zeke's gonna play week 1

Even though Zeke's gonna play week 1

Ken then took Jeremy Maclin in the 7th and Eric Decker in the 10th round. Both of these guys could be huge steals for various reasons. Maclin finally got away from Alex Smith and plays on a team with a vertical passing game. He’s had 800+ yards and 5 TDs or more in 5 of the last 6 seasons. He could also be on waivers by week 6, who knows. Eric Decker upgraded QBs from whatever the Jets are throwing out there to Marcus Mariota, so that’s good. The only issue is that the Titans don’t throw much and he’s been pretty injury prone the last few years.

Last but not least – Delanie Walker. Despite finishing last year as the 5th highest scoring TE, Walker lasted until the 8th round and was the 7th tight end off the board. That seems like pretty good value to me. He’s not flashy, but he’s caught 60 or more passes in four straight seasons.

LAST 5:

Ken’s last five picks were a mix and I’ll summarize because I’m trying to go home soon (sorry Ken).

Dak Prescott – I see the appeal here, he was really good last year. Having said that I think the NFL defenses will catch up to him a bit in year 2. Also, he may not have Zeke.

Eddie Lacy – fucking love that Kenny took him here. I thought he was gonna reach for him in like the 8th round but he held fast and got his boy. He’ll likely be worthless and droppable by week 3 but I loved it anyways. Never change Ken.

Adam Viniatieri – without Andrew Luck I don’t see much appeal here. On second thought that might be a good thing if the Colt’s offense constantly stalls when they get past mid-field.

Panthers D/ST – ehhhh not buying this one. They let Julio Jones have a 300 yard receiving game last year sooooooooooooo NO.

Jordan Matthews – this was actually an awesome pick, nicely done Ken. Matthews is kinda hurt right now but he could come back and end up catching 75 passes. Lesean McCoy and Zay Jones aside the Bills don’t have too many options.

STRENGTH:

Ken has a pretty strong WR group and could definitely have the best when it comes to WR1 and WR2. If Dez and Antonio produce like they are capable of then he could be getting 40 points a week out of just those two guys. Jordan Matthews was a steal as I mentioned and I think Jeremy Maclin has the potential to be a 1,000 yard, 8 TD guy with the FLACCOPiAN TUBES throwing him the ball. I totally ignore what any WR does with Alex Smith at QB so let’s see how this goes. Eric Decker may be a bust, but he could also catch 10 TDs since he’s a red-zone monster.

WEAKNESS:

I guess I’ll say Ken’s running backs here, but it’s mostly personal preference. Maybe I’m still bitter about Lamone’s lucky ass beating me in the playoffs (I obviously am, who are we kidding), but I’m just not high on Montgomery and won’t be drafting him in any leagues. I’m also staying away from Leonard Fournette because I don’t want a Todd Gurley situation on my hands. Darren McFadden could be good, but only til Zeke is back. It also sounds like Alfred Morris is going to eat into his workload a bit. Last but not least, Eddie Lacy…. Lacy is….. ah forget it.

DRAFT GRADE, PREDICTION AND FINAL NOTES:

Before I start I have to note one thing – this is the second year in a row Ken is hitching his wagon to a good RB on a terrible team……and naming his team after them. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice…

Anyways, I give Ken a B- for this draft and give him about an 81. It’s slightly worse than Guy’s draft because he doesn’t have the X-Factor in Gronk (Dez is good but Gonk is better). All in all it’s not that bad though, he’s got some good upside picks and I definitely think he’ll be competitive. This is all personal preference though and I just don’t really like Fournette or Montgomery this year.

In terms of predictions, I say Ken will finish 5-8 and miss the playoffs. Crazy to think it’s been 3 years since Ken finished 1st place in the regular season with a 10-3 record. Interestingly enough I think he had Antonio Brown and DeMarco Murray that year – he now has Antonio and another Cowboys player. Maybe that’ll help him get back to the playoffs, but as of now I don’t think so.
