WEEK 10 - PART 1
GWBL ENTERTAINMENT - WEEK 10 - PART 1
Welcome back everyone and apologies for missing last week’s recaps. I had some minor life things going on and tragically, I wasn’t able to get to a computer. Fear not, for your commish is back. This week we’re going to go around the league, check in on each team and discuss some news and notes from the past two weeks. Here we go.
Make America Gordon Again (1-9):
Can’t bury the lead here: Tieg finally got his first win of the season and avoided going 0-10 to start the year. His season may be over, but he’s a competitor and he’s going to do his best to piss off the playoff contending teams. He did just that by taking down The Skid Row Nightcrawlers this week by a score of 108-97. Congrats to Tieg - that’s a big monkey off his back because 0-13 would be hard to live with.
In terms of player developments, Melvin Gordon is finally back . The early season holdout has combined for 55.6 points over the last two weeks with scores of 27 and 28 vs the Packers and the Raiders. In each of his last two games, Gordon has had 20 or more carries, 80 or more rushing yards, 25 or more receiving yards and 1 or more TDs. It’s too little too late for Tieg’s squad, but at least he’s getting some kind of return for Gordon.
The Skid Row Nightcrawlers (3-7):
Easy segue here - by losing to Tieg, Guy’s season is effectively over. At 3-7 he’s 2 games back of the final playoff spot with 3 games to go. The only chance he has is to win out and have Robby D, Kev, Lamone and Dylan lose out. I haven’t looked at the schedule to confirm if that’s possible, but I’d guess he’s mathematically eliminated. Even if he’s not, it doesn’t look like he’s even paying attention at this point. He started Matthew Stafford and James Conner this week and both were ruled out well in advance of their games. The Stafford one is somewhat justifiable - it was a surprise that came out Sunday morning and Guy lives on the west coast. The James Conner one was pure apathy though - he hasn’t played in 2 weeks. Hopefully Guy will step it up the last three weeks - while his season is over his matchups still impact the playoff seeding.
HOW’S HOOTERS? KiTTLES? (4-6):
A tough loss for Lamone that not only ends his 4 game winning streak, but also puts his season in jeopardy. He doesn’t HAVE to win out to make the playoffs, but a 6-7 record usually doesn’t get the job done an 5-8 definitely won’t. Unfortunately for him he has a pretty tough schedule of the last 3 weeks and his opponents have a combined record of 20-10 on the year. It’s time to put up or shut up for the Kittles.
A few notes in terms of his roster: Michael Thomas continues to toy with every secondary he faces and is easily the best WR in the NFL right now.
The Ohio State Buckeye has 103 more receiving yards than the #2 player (Mike Evans) and 18 more catches than the #2 player (DeAndre Hopkins). He’s on pace for more than 150 catches and over 1,800 yards and while he only has 4 TDs this year, he’s still the #1 WR in fantasy football.
Unfortunately for Lamone, Thomas’ teammate Drew Brees may have killed his season. Brees put up 16 points in what appeared to be a cakewalk matchup against the Falcons defense in Week 10. Lamone lost by about 13 points and Brees’ lackluster performance was a big part of that.
MaKamaraca Great Again (4-6):
Kev also had a tough Week 10 loss and like Lamone, is on the outside looking into the playoffs. While he’s not definitively out, he’d have to win at least 2 of his final 3 games in order to make it (and even that might not be good enough). While I often bitch about my misfortunes in this league (coughlastyearcough), noone has had it worse than Kev. Ironically enough, his worst two losses this season have come against my team. In Week 1 he lost by 6.7 points and in Week 10 he lost by 8.8. If either of those matchups go the other way he’s looking at a 5-5 record and a good shot at making the playoffs. Now he might have to go on a 3 game win streak just to get there.
Alvin Kamara has been pretty disappointing this year and Kev can’t be pleased with his production. He’s RB20 on the year and only averages 17 points per game. Not bad for a 2nd round pick, but kinda bad for the #2 overall pick. After scoring 31 total TDs in his first two seasons, Kamara has just 2 this year. And both came in the same game. After catching 81 passes in each of his first two seasons, Kamara has just 41 receptions this year. He’d have to catch 6 or more passes in every game from here on out to get back to 81. He’s a great talent and I’m sure he’ll end the season strong, but it’s hard to argue that he hasn’t been a bust so far.
Kingofthe NorthShore (5-5):
Finally we make it to a playoff team - Robby D who is currently holding down the 6th seed. Things were looking a little shaky for Bob D after Week 8 as he was 3-5 and coming off an 8 point loss to Frader. Since then he’s averaged nearly 130 points per week and won both games. They were big wins too - one against Dylan and the other against Lamone who are both close to him in the standings.
The Week 10 win over Lamone was critical and it was in large part due to Derrick Henry. I don’t know what it is, but Derrick Henry has had his two biggest games when Robby D plays against Luma. In Week 1 Henry put up 32 against Lamone and this week he put up 39.7. Those are his only 2 games with more than 30 points and the 71.9 points account for 35% of Henry’s fantasy points this year. That’s bad luck for Luma.
Final note: Robby D won in Week 10 despite Phillip Rivers scoring 11 and David Johnson scoring .5 fantasy points. RIP Luma.
